PYRAMIDS ON MARS |
|
TRIBAL NOISE-CORE with Middle East/East Indian influences using unusual (non-guitar) solid body electric instruments. PYRAMIDS ON MARS conceived by Martin Kvisvic (Marz). 1998 was spent building and developing the new instruments which would be necessary for this new sound. These include solid body electric sitar stick (long sitar), two cello sticks, electric dulcimer, oud and bouzookie. By the summer of 1998 project material was being written. By the end of 98 the material was recorded for the first two Pyramids releases. But some recordings date back to 1993. In 1999 Marz was without the original musicians who were on the first two releases and most of the year was spent looking for suitable players to make a working unit for live performance. The new musical unit was finally established after countless auditions and initial changes in lineup by early 2000 which is to be the core of the ever-evolving PYRAMIDS ON MARS. Final live lineup: 1 MARTIN (MARZ) KVISVIC: vocals, long (electric) sitar, electric spike fiddle, veena fiddle, electric cello sticks, recorder, electric bouzookie, electric oud. 2 TAMARA LIPKIN: electric dulcimer, recoder. 3 JOHN GARCIA: bass 4 SANDOR FINTOR: upright bass drum, electric harp 5 ROBERT JOSEPH DAVIS: upright bass drum, telegraph pole 6 JOHN KENDAL: bow electric bass Third release recorded and live group disbanded in 2001. Envisioned as the electric tribal orchestra the group could have expanded to as many as 17 pieces but the practicality of rehearsals limited the band's size to 6 or 7. As of early 2015 there are two projects at large using the name Pyramids on Mars. One entity, not connected with this site, is a Canadian band. This article is an attempt to clear the confusion. For example, there are two sites generated by "LastFM" covering Pyramids on Mars. on one site. Only the Martin Kvisvic Pyramids on Mars song Yarari is featured, (see urckarm records 2007). The second site has the bio/text and photos for Martin Kvisvic Pyramids on Mars but has the music for the Canadian group. The installment of this updated website was primarily motivated by this discrepancy. For the record, the Martin Kvisvic Pyramids on Mars has been an active project as of 1998 with embryonic, (precursory), recordings going back to 1993. The name has been known since Pyramids on Mars became a live unit in 1999 and "Lines" as a self release was available at Rhino Records in 2000. And can be purchased from BandCamp. The Canadian Pyramids on Mars, (first release in 2013), is obviously less than five years old. See the advert and live broadcast on the bottom left of this page, KSPC Live Show at the Press, (Claremont), features Amps for Christ and Pyramids on Mars, August 2, 2000.
